Janet
Ginnings is a truly gifted therapist. Currently starring in Celebrity
Scissorhands on the BBC alongside Lee Stafford, her beauty skills and
vibrant personality make her shine on the series and a joy to watch.
Her amazing ability to understand each and every client combined with an extensive range of beauty treatments has proven popular with celebrities from the worlds of modelling (e.g. Elle McPherson, Caprice), television (e.g. Meera Syal, Zoe Tucker, Davinia Taylor, Sadie Frost), radio (e.g. Katy Hill), music (Shirley Bassey, Preeya Kalidas, of Bombay Dreams) and many others (e.g. Ivana Trump, Meg Matthews). Janet has developed a good relationship with a number of high profile women of Asian origin including Meera Syal, Preeya Kalidas (Bombay Dreams), Rani Singh and Jayshree Kapoor. These women use Janet’s services as they feel comfortable with her style, love her treatment menu and in particular want to support a fellow Asian woman in her business venture.
Janet has shown great personal ambition, commitment and business acumen
by establishing and operating her salon, Janet Ginnings Hair and Beauty
in the heart of London’s prestigious Mayfair. She comes from a traditional
land-owning family in India, her grandfather was a personal physician
of the Nawab (King) of Bhopal and for his family’s achievement he
was rewarded in land. With a background in medicine and traditional healing,
Janet received this wisdom from her family and has used this as part of
her treatments. Growing up on a farm surrounded by her family gave Janet
an early introduction into making her own beauty formulations from recipes
that were passed down from generation to generation. It was here that
Janet’s passion for beauty began as she started to experiment with
the abundance of natural ingredients to hand.
She has developed a range of professional and unique salon treatments
aptly named Indian Infusion that allow her to offer a synergy of ancient
Indian beauty therapies together with today’s most cutting-edge
beauty treatments. Originating in her native homeland and using ingredients
like goat’s milk, oils, spices, jasmine oil, yoghurt and turmeric,
Janet has developed these treatments to give her clients the very best
of eastern and western influences for fantastic results.
Janet came to England with her husband and two children and this in turn allowed her to turn the vision of owning her own salon into a reality. Having trained at the Morris International School of Hair and Beauty to become a qualified hairdresser, beautician and aromatherapist and at the tender age of 24 she worked in a salon in Mayfair, London, and from that time kept in contact with the owner of the business. In 1996 she purchased the salon from the owner, a gentleman in his 60’s who sought to retire. Whilst the salon had been established for many years in more recent times was somewhat neglected. The premises were tired, the furniture and equipment was overdue for replacement, the client base predominantly consisted of ladies in their 60’s, and the business had not grown for many years. At that time it was predominantly a hair salon.
However, the location had enormous potential. It is located in a beautiful
Georgian
building in the heart of Mayfair, London, and was in an excellent catchment
area for local customers. Janet’s challenge was to establish her
business and make it her own ensuring that the space realised its full
potential. Rather than grasping a stagnating business, she started afresh.
Firstly she developed her own business structure and set this into operation,
she created a new vibrant business by focusing on growth using a number
of mechanisms simultaneously. To do this she built up a team of creative,
hardworking and happy employees, and a network of related organisations.
Janet also completed overhauled the premises, installing her own business
and branded the salon Janet Ginnings Hair and Beauty.
Janet focuses on providing high quality services, to both retain existing clients and ensure that the new customers are attracted to the Salon. Her business developed to provide a full range of hair dressing and beauty services, from ‘top to toe’, with services ranging from a simple manicure to a high tech body sculpting, a full range of massage, facials, celebrity full body treatments and her unique signature Indian Fusion treatments and products.
Janet Ginnings Hair and Beauty has been included in the ‘Good Salon Guide’. In 2005 the salon was also recognised as part of the award ‘head of the year’ by the ‘National Hairdressing Federation’. To achieve a high quality service Janet continually seeks out the newest and latest products and treatment systems so that she remains abreast of current themes and trends in the industry and can provide her client base with what they require and read in the press. To this end, Janet attends all of the beauty trade fairs to keep up with new developments, reads widely and has included the following services and treatments in the salon since she took it over.
Janet has a keen interest in marketing and public relations and indeed has a keen eye for a good story and works well to capitalise on celebrity endorsements and current trends in the beauty industry. As a result, the salon has generated press coverage across a wide spectrum of publications, including hair and beauty magazines (e.g. OK magazine), national newspapers (e.g. the Times, Daily Mail, Daily Mirror), local newspapers (the London Evening Standard, the London Metro), local radio (LBC) and national television (e.g. the Loraine Kelly show on GMTV, the series ‘The Salon’).
She works closely with her appointed public relations consultancy to achieve her business objectives. As part of the promotional campaign for the salon Janet has also helped to raise the salon profile by hosting parties, supporting charitable functions, providing hair dressing services to models at courtier launches and doing photo-shoots of the latest hairstyles for magazines.
Janet herself is called upon to give expert quotes and comments in the consumer beauty press and she has recently secured herself a regular comment column in the professional beauty magazine, Health and Beauty Salon.
Janet focused on enhancing her employees’ skills so that they are capable of providing a higher quality of service to clients. In this regard, Janet entered a staff development program and was awarded ‘Investors in People’ in 1998. She recruited and trained junior staff, thereby developing opportunities for previously unskilled youngsters. These youngsters were provided with transferable skills and work experience. Much of the training provided is undertaken in house by Janet herself.
Over this period the salon increased the number of its employees from three to eleven and so established a depth in both the number of employees and range of skills. Improving the quality and training of staff was seen as crucial to the success of the salon. Highly skilled, trained staff are the face of the salon are client facing and thus present the professional image and key messages of Janet’s philosophy. Janet has recently been recognised by the Asian Women of Achievement Awards by being short listed in the Entrepreneur of the Year Awards category. This year she launches her range of skincare that is based on natural ingredients and in particular – wheatgrass juice. The range is called Indian Infusion.
